General Questions
1. What is The Chick Lit Review?
Answer: The Chick Lit Review is a bimonthly online literary magazine featuring well written short stories and novel reviews for and about savvy and chic young women. The intent of The Chick Lit Review is to provide a forum for experienced and novice writers to showcase their work, involving various topics facing young women in their 20s and 30s—love, personal relationships, careers, school, fashion, etc. The stories are written for entertainment and light-hearted reflection on the world around us from a young female perspective.
2. Can men publish work in The Chick Lit Review?
Answer: Yes, men can publish with The Chick Lit Review. As with female writers, both fiction and book reviews must fall within the genre of chick lit.
3. How often is The Chick Lit Review published?
Answer: We are a bimonthly online magazine. The magazine is published on the first of every other month.
4. Where is The Chick Lit Review based?
Answer: We are based in the Washington, DC area of the United States.
5. Does The Chick Lit Review publish work from outside of the United States?
Answer: The Chick Lit Review is based in the United States in the Washington, DC area. We welcome submissions from international writers. However, The Chick Lit Review currently cannot pay writers for their short stories or reviews. Writers receive publication credit with The Chick Lit Review and can include contact information, including website addresses in their bios.
6. Does The Chick Lit Review publish non-fiction stories?
Answer: No, The Chick Lit Review does not publish non-fiction stories. The only non-fiction work we publish would be book reviews.
7. Does CLR publish poetry?
Answer: No, unfortunately, we do not publish poetry at this time.
Questions on Submitting:
8. Is there a deadline for submissions?
Answer: No, there isn’t a deadline for submissions. Submissions are read year around. However, if a writer would like to be considered for a particular issue, they are most likely to be considered for that issue if submitted 30 days prior to the publication date.
9. Is there a limit on the number of stories/book reviews a writer can submit?
Answer: No, there is not a limit to the number of stories or book reviews a writer can submit. CLR has received tremendous responses from writers submitting work, so publishing with CLR is competitive. Please submit your best quality of work.
10. Does The Chick Lit Review accept simultaneous submissions?
Answer: Yes, we do accept simultaneous submissions. We only ask that if your work is accepted elsewhere, that you’d please let us know.
11. I would like to apply for a position with The Chick Lit Review. What would I need to do to be considered?
Answer: The Chick Lit Review publishes short fiction and book reviews from freelance writers. We do not hire writers. To be considered, please submit your completed short story or book review. Unless if you have specific questions on if your material is appropriate, there is no need to query.
12. Would submitting my resume improve my chances of being published with The Chick Lit Review?
Answer: No, submitting a resume will not help your chances of being published with CLR. CLR evaluates the submitted work, not the “qualifications” of the writer. While previously published credits, employment, and education are subjects that can be included in the writer’s bio, a resume is not necessry. Please do not submit resumes.
13. It’s been a couple of weeks since I submitted my work. Has my work been received?
Answer: Due to the large volume of submissions, the reading time is between 4-8 weeks. If you do not hear back from us after 8 weeks, please email for confirmation.
14. The Chick Lit Review rejected my work. Is it possible to receive feedback?
Answer: The large volume of submissions makes it hard for us to provide feedback on all rejected submissions. Under some circumstances, we will provide feedback on rejected work.
Questions on Book Reviews:
15. Are reviews submitted on spec or are reviews assigned?
Answer: Yes, all reviews are submitted on speculation. The Chick Lit Review does not assign reviews or pay kill fees.
16. Do you have any preferences for books to be reviewed?
Answer: No, we do not have any preferences for reviewed books. The only criteria is that the reviewed book must fall within the genre of chick lit. Reviewed books can be either fiction or nonfiction. We enjoy some of the creativity that writers have in their book selections. Please feel free to submit reviews on books that you think would be of interest to our readers.
17. Do you prefer reviews on books that are new releases?
Answer: No, we do not have a preference for whether a book is a new release or if it is older.
18. I’ve recently published a novel. Would The Chick Lit Review consider reviewing my book?
Answer: Most of the reviews on this site are written by freelance writers. Due to the time commitment involved in reading a book and writing a review, only under rare circumstances will we consider reviewing a book ourselves.
